The Halton Regional Police Service (HRPS) has completed the first phase (Summer 2024) of Project #Unplated, with the goal of identifying unplated motorcycles and dangerous drivers. The project was initiated due to an unprecedented amount of unplated motorcycles failing to stop for police officers, an act which is most often seen during the warm summer weather.

These unplated motorcycles are often used in racing, stunt driving and dangerous driving occurrences. Throughout the summer, photos of unplated motorcycles seen driving throughout the region of Halton were posted to HRPS social media accounts in order to generate tips from members of the public in identifying these motorists.

Photo’s of yet to be identified unplated motorcycles and riders from phase one of Project #Unplated have been included at the end of the release.

As a result of Project Unplated, 51 motorcycles were identified where their licence plates were concealed/obstructed or not present. The intelligence gathered was shared with GTA police services to assist those services with their own investigations.

In the interest of public safety various techniques were utilised to strategically and safely stop the motorcycles in order to prevent pursuits. Where appropriate, officers exercised discretion to educate involved motorcyclists who had not been involved in reckless behaviour; however, charges were laid in some instances which included: Fail to Stop for Police, Stunt Driving, No Insurance, Operate Unsafe Vehicle, Drive motor vehicle no license or improper license, Use Plate Not Authorized, Use Fake Plate, No Plate, Plate Improperly Displayed, Improper Muffler, Unnecessary Noise, Careless Driving, and Speeding.

A total of five Motorcycles were towed/impounded by Police during the course of the project.

Motorcyclists are vulnerable road users and over-represented in collision fatalities. The HRPS hopes that this increased enforcement through Project #Unplated will help save lives and increase the safety of our roads for all users. Though Project #Unplated  is formally completed, the same enforcement activity will continue.

The HRPS remains committed to road safety through prevention, education and enforcement initiatives.
