The Halton Regional Police Service (HRPS) has made an arrest and laid multiple charges after a male brandished a knife during a shoplifting incident in Burlington.

On September 4, 2024 at 1:53 p.m. a male entered Fortinos located at 2515 Appleby Line in Burlington where he stole a variety of grocery items. Loss prevention officers attempted to arrest the male however the male fled to the parking lot attempting to make his escape in a vehicle but collided with a second vehicle.  The male exited his vehicle where he brandished a knife towards employee’s that were attempting to intervene. With the assistance of loss prevention officers and bystanders the male was subdued and held for responding HRPS officers. Two Fortinos employees and one civilian suffered minor injuries during the altercation.

 

Omar Abugalib (24), of Hamilton has been charged with the following:

  • Theft Under $5000
  • Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose
  • Assault with a Weapon (3 Counts)
  • Assault with Intent to Resist Arrest
  • Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle

 

Abugalib was held in custody pending a bail hearing.
