The Halton Regional Police Service (HRPS) is conducting an ongoing investigation into multiple incidents of pickpocket thefts that have occurred at the Toronto Premium Outlets in Halton Hills.
Since mid-November 2024 HRPS has received 104 incidents of cell phones being reported lost or stolen by patrons while shopping within Toronto Premium Outlets. Investigators are sharing security video of a reported theft in an effort to alert shoppers and increase public awareness by providing a visual example as to how these thefts are completed.
Suspects often operate in teams of two or more watching for unsuspecting patrons who use their cell phones while shopping. When a shopper is identified they are followed until an opportunity exists where one suspect is able to bump or rub up against the victim, simultaneously accessing the victim’s pocket and taking the cell phone, typically from an unsecured jacket pocket where the phone was last placed. The suspect then quickly hands the stolen cell phone to a second suspect to complete the theft. As demonstrated in the attached video the theft only takes seconds to complete.
Members of the 1 District Criminal Investigations Bureau are working to solve these thefts and are offering tips and suggestions to assist the public to protect against pickpockets.
- Secure your phone in a fastened inside jacket pocket or pouch when not in use
- Maintain a tight grip or control of your phone when in crowded spaces
- Never leave your phone unattended
- Maintain awareness of your surroundings, people that may be watching or following
- Keep your phone secure and out of sight, only use if necessary
Immediately report any incident of theft and suspicious activity to police by calling 9-1-1 or via the HRPS general line at 905-825-4777.
