The Halton Regional Police Service (HRPS) is requesting public assistance after two males were arrested in possession of a firearm.
On August 26 2024, at 7:27 pm HRPS officers responded to the reports of a loud bang in the residential area of Victoria Street and Chalmers Street in Oakville. Thanks to tremendous community response and assistance, two suspects were observed fleeing the area in a vehicle with officers quickly locating the vehicle and suspects a short time later. A sawed-off rifle was found in possession of one of the suspects (see attached photo). Given there were numerous reports of a loud bang around the time of the incident police do believe the rifle was discharged. No injuries were reported and investigators are attempting to determine the purpose of the discharge.
David Hilchey (25) of Oakville has been charged with the following:
- Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm
- Knowledge of Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm
- Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose
- Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm in a Motor Vehicle
- Careless Storage of a Firearm
- Carry a Concealed Weapon
- Disguise with Intent
Hilchey was held in custody pending a bail hearing.
A 16 year old male resident of Burlington has been charged with the following:
- Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm
- Knowledge of Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm
- Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose
- Unauthorized Possession of a Firearm in a Motor Vehicle
- Careless Storage of a Firearm
- Carry a Concealed Weapon
- Disguise with Intent
- Fail to Comply with a Youth Sentence Order
The youth was held in custody pending a bail hearing.
Police want to thank the community for their swift action and communication to help bring this occurrence to a timely resolve.
Police are requesting residents in the area of Victoria Street and Riverview Street in Oakville to examine their CCTV systems (audio or video) between the times of 7:10pm and 7:30pm for any footage that may have captured the suspects. A photo of David Hilchey has been included.
